Contact Jan Wood Harris

Jan Wood Harris is a professional artist who is skilled in many techniques including watercolor, pencil drawing, oil and soft pastels, and mastered the art of lost wax casting as a jeweler for 17 years. Jan successfully displayed her wares at the famous Pageant of the Masters art show in Laguna Beach, California for nine years, and she played Irish fiddle in the Celtic band Tintangel! Check out the collaboration of talents shared by Jan's whimsical watercolor portraits and her twin sister Dru Wood-Golden's hand carved and painted frames on the Teachers Gallery page. Jan taught herself to create beautiful art and has now turned to sharing the joy and excitement of art with children.

TO MY STUDENTS: I can't begin to tell you how you have all enriched my life in so many ways. Seeing you all every week, your smiles, your laughter and watching you all grow up right before my eyes! I've watched your talent and ability evolve steadily, the confidence you have developed when challenging yourselves to try new things makes my heart smile!  And the happy looks on your faces after you see your wonderfully completed works of art!!

Experience

Jan has been teaching Fine Art Classes to children for over 15 years and most recently adults as well. Parents are welcome to join their children at their classes and share the fun and excitement of art together.

Jan teaches at Saddleback College in the "College for Kids" program, providing fine art classes for kids for the last 9 years. She'll be teaching at the College again in the summer of 2009.

She also helped develop the "Culture Smart Thru Art" program with her sister Dru Wood-Golden at the Mission San Juan Capistrano and had team taught the classes for three years as well.

Fun

Jan's teaching style is relaxed yet focused. She wants the kids to feel no pressure to 'get it right', yet, encourage them to embrace and understand the techniques needed to draw objects, landscapes, portraits, animals etc. in a way that brings a certain realism to their art. Then, from that point of understanding, the freedom & creativity to develop their own style. Jan is always reinforcing the elements of composition and basic drawing techniques, all in an atmosphere of creative freedom and fun!
